The consultation
During the first consultation, we will discuss your wishes and requirements with regard to the rhinoplasty surgery. We will examine your nose and use a mirror and, when necessary, photos and drawings to explain more about the possible changes in shape and/or size. We then inform you about the treatment, the surgically technical aspects, possible complications, and the aftercare during the postoperative trajectory. We will also ask you some questions about a number of health aspects and your use of medication. All information will be documented in the Electronic Patient File. The consultant will then discuss some other practical issues and will give you a possible date for the surgery. Issues that will be discussed are:
– Your medication use, allergies and medical conditions
– Your tobacco, drug and alcohol use
– Any previous operations
During the intake interview, we also take photos to make a clear analysis of your facial profile.
Rhinoplasty: the operation
On the day of the operation you can report to the desk. You will then be escorted to the operating complex by a nurse.
No rhinoplasty is the same. The aim of the operation is to optimize the aesthetics of the nose and to bring it into balance with the rest of the face. The starting situation, ethnic background, skin type and age play an important role in this. Sometimes a simple procedure is enough to make the nose tip or nostrils narrower. Sometimes complicated operations are required on the bridge of the nose or the entire nose. The duration of the operation depends on the extent of the operation and is discussed in advance.
In general, a rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. The rhinoplasty is performed open or closed, this is discussed by the plastic surgeon during the first consultation. With an open rhinoplasty, small incisions are made that are hardly noticeable afterwards, and with a closed operation you do not get any scars on the outside of the nose. If necessary, you will be given wound tampons in both nostrils after the operation. After the operation you will relax in the recovery room.
Aftercare and recovery after rhinoplasty
The surgeon and nurse will decide If you can go home after the procedure. Please arrange for someone to collect you and take you home as you will not be allowed to drive yourself. You will need to drop by the clinic the next day so we can remove the nasal tampons. The next appointment will be a week later, when we will remove the nose splint and the stitches.

Risks and Complications
Rhinoplasty surgery generally involves few complications and risks. Our plastic surgeon performs the corrective procedure meticulously and with great care. Nevertheless, as with any type of surgery, there are some risks such as:
– Post-correction bleeding
– Swelling of the nose
– Bruises under the eyes
– Decreased sense of smell
– Impaired nasal breathing
– (Temporary) numbness of the nose tip
– Risk of ignition
– The aim is symmetry, 100% cannot be guaranteed
– Impaired wound healing
– Excessive scarring
Rhinoplasty FAQs
DO I NEED GENERAL ANAESTHESIA DURING THE RHINOPLASTY SURGERY?
In most cases, the rhinoplasty surgery is performed under general anaesthesia.
WHEN CAN I GO OUT IN PUBLIC AGAIN?
After the corrective surgery, we will place an aluminium cap on your nose which must be worn for six to ten days. In most cases, we also place nasal tampons inside your nose, which the assistant at the clinic will remove the next day. The area around your nose and under the eyes will be swollen and sensitive for a few days after the procedure. After 10 to 15 days you can resume your daily work activities again. We advise you to wait four weeks before resuming physically heavy activities.
Is the end result of the rhinoplasty visible quickly?
The ultimate result of a rhinoplasty will only be visible after about one year. Naturally, you will see immediately that your nose has changed, but the bone, cartilage, and skin tissue need time to recover.
Can I wear glasses after rhinoplasty?
When the nose bridge has been corrected, you are not allowed to wear (sun)glasses that rest on the bridge during the first 6 weeks after the surgery. There is a solution for this when wearing your glasses: you can attach your glasses to your forehead by using a plaster.
