Easter Colored Crinkle Cookies

Making these colorful cookies was not easy. My hand got messy. I had to wash my hand every time I applied a color. But, after just 15 minutes of a mess, I had four colorful cookie dough with me.

I really love working with colors. I generally use gel food coloring. I have also added some white in each color to get that romantic pastel shade.

However, after my cookies were done. I asked myself what was my favorite part about baking these colorful crinkle cookies. And, you won't believe the answer I got from myself.

It was nothing but the messy part while I was wrapping my cookie dough in color. I guess that's how I want and love things.

What should my Crinkle Cookie Dough feel Like?

Your cookie dough for crinkle cookies shouldn't be too sticky nor should it be too dry or crumbly. It should be soft, non-sticky and easily manageable.

If you are holding your cookie dough in your hand, it shouldn't stick to your hand and you should be able to handle it easily. Try catching small cookie shapes balls from one hand to another.

And, there should be NO cookie dough sticking to your hand. That's the kind of cookie dough we want. Do you get my point?

What if my cookie dough is crumbly and doesn't stick together?

If you see that your cookie dough has turned out dry, crumbly and it is not sticking together. It means you have too much flour or cornstarch.

The only way out would be to use some liquid agents like vegetable oil or milk to infuse some moisture in your dough. (Don't worry! your cookies WILL turn out great)

What if my cookie dough is too sticky?

Your cookie dough shouldn't be too sticky. But, if it's sticky, you can dap it in some flour or cornstarch. It will absorb the excess moisture. Also, keep it covered in the refrigerator as it will also help soak the excess moisture from your cookies.

How much food color have I used?

I have used gel food coloring. Since it's the best that we can find here.

Pink Cookies - 2 drops of Pink color

Yellow cookies - 3 drops of Yellow

Purple Cookies - 3 drops of Pink + 3 Drops of Blue

Blue Cookies - 3 Drops of Blue Color (I know they look greenish, I should've added more blue color, but still they look so pretty )

What Colors Can you Choose?

Well, it totally depends upon you. I personally like Easter colors - Purple, Yellow, Pink, and Blue. But, I have seen many people use green or blue as well. Which is totally ok! As long as your cookie looks colorful, you can choose any color you want.

How Did I get those Gorgeous Crinkles on my cookies?

Well, this was a big question for me while I started baking the first batch. And, it turns out no matter how much I learn nothing can beat experience.

Hence, I didn't get it right for the first time! My Cookies turned out to be a big ball of colorful sugar. (Sad Story)

Long story short, you have to coat your cookies in confectioner's sugar to get those crinkles. While coating sugar, don't be shy to add more. Make them look like white snowballs. Coat them in as much sugar as you want. And, I promise you that you will get gorgeous crinkles in your cookies.

Another important tip, do not flatten out the cookie dough before baking. They will take their shape in the oven themselves.

How to Bake these Colorful Crinkle Cookies?

To bake these colorful Easter Crinkle cookies you don't need any special ingredient. It's just baking any other normal cookie which we always bake.

  • The process starts with creaming the butter and sugar in a bowl until it gets light and fluffy.
  • Then we add egg and some vanilla and mix some more. I have used a hand mixer. You can mix with whatever you have.
  • Then we move on to sift the flour, baking soda, and cornstarch for your cookie dough. We sift the dry ingredients so that we get no lump in our batter.
  • After we have added the dry ingredients to our wet ingredients then it's just folding them together until well combined.

To make Easter Colorful Crinkle Cookies, I divided my cookie dough into four parts.

  • For the first dough, I took some yellow gel food color - you can use a pinch of turmeric if you want non-dye but color - and mixed my cookie dough with the color.

I made sure that I do not knead the dough because it would make them overdone. And, I did not want that. I just massaged them enough over the dough to get that yellow color which I was looking for I repeat the same with pink and blue.

  • For the Purple color, I had mixed pink with blue. And it came out better than my expectations. I didn't have purple food color with me. But, you can use purple food color if you have.

Now, I kept in mind that I have to chill my dough before using it. I am a strict believer in chilling my cookie dough in the refrigerator since I have experienced the difference.

After having chilled my dough for about 2 hours (I wish I could chill it overnight, But I was dying to taste it. I baked them for 10 minutes at 350F. They came out just the way I wanted.

  • After the Cookies get baked allow them to cool down in the hot baking tray for 5 minutes and then transfer them to the wire rack.
